Dyslexia Assessments

Why have a dyslexia assessment?

When it comes to dyslexia, there’s a common misconception that it affects everyone in the same way, but that’s not true. Each person with dyslexia experiences it differently, which is why getting a dyslexia assessment is so important. Regardless of age, gender, or background, anyone can benefit from an assessment.

A full dyslexia assessment helps children, parents, and teachers understand the child’s unique needs regardless of whether they are diagnosed with dyslexia or not. This understanding allows everyone involved to provide the right support and guidance when needed.

The detailed diagnostic report also ensures that schools or institutions are well-prepared to meet your child’s specific educational needs. It includes recommendations for support arrangements as they progress through school, helping parents and teachers set realistic expectations for their learning journey. Furthermore, a dyslexia diagnosis will entitle your child to receive Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) if they choose to go to university.

Opting for a private assessment means your child can be assessed quickly, allowing them to receive the specialised help and support they need sooner. For many families, discovering that a child has dyslexia brings a sense of relief. It marks the beginning of a journey where both the child and parents can better understand how they learn best. The first step on this path is getting a diagnostic report.

What to expect during a dyslexia assessment

The assessment process begins with gathering some background information about your child from you, your child, and their school. This is done through a simple questionnaire.

On the day of the assessment, we’ll start with a relaxed chat with your child to help them feel comfortable. Then, we’ll guide them through a series of activities designed to understand their learning style and needs.

A Rising Kites assessment includes:

  • A review of your child’s educational and family background.

  • A thorough assessment of their cognitive abilities, literacy skills, and overall potential.

  • A detailed analysis that highlights their strengths and areas where they may need extra support.

  • Personalised learning strategies tailored to your child’s needs.

  • General recommendations for any further assessments, support, or resources they might benefit from.

  • A clear, easy-to-understand report that breaks everything down for you.

  • An optional follow-up video call to answer any questions you or your child may have after receiving the report.

  • The option to join specialised support sessions to help your child understand their dyslexia and develop strategies to thrive in their learning.

Dyslexia Screening

If your child is under 8 and not quite ready for a full dyslexia assessment, a dyslexia screening test could be a helpful first step for you and their school.

What is a dyslexia screening test?

A dyslexia screening test looks at the basic cognitive skills that are important for reading and writing. While it won't provide a definitive diagnosis of dyslexia, it can help you understand if your child might be having difficulties related to dyslexia. The screening is conducted by qualified specialist teachers who are experienced assessors.

After the screening, you’ll receive a report that offers insights into your child’s cognitive skills related to learning literacy. The report will also include practical recommendations for support and interventions to help your child.
